English

Offerings include a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree with a Literature or Creative Writing emphasis as well as an English minor.

The study of English provides students the wisdom and experience which comes through reading great literature; improves students’ critical thinking and aesthetic appreciation; increases students’ proficiency in speaking, reading and writing; and provides students opportunities to master the content, methodologies, and skills in an area of specialization. Thus, English offers students a comprehensive and flexible major for a variety of career fields and pre-professional studies. In addition, English remains a valuable choice as a second major, or as a minor, for students whose main areas of study are in other disciplines.

The English major requires 36 hours in literature or creative writing courses. English majors complete 18 hours of core requirements. Majors completing a B.A. must complete 6 hours of a single language. Majors completing a B.S. must take 6 hours of social sciences (3 hours must be unique and not part of the gen ed requirement). Students also complete an additional 12 required hours.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will demonstrate aesthetic awareness through study of major literary works, to include genres, periods, and critical approaches to British, American, and World Literature.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to write effectively through research or creative writing.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to read passages appropriate to the discipline and perform creative or literary critical analyses.
  • Students will gain preparation for entry into professional and graduate work.
